Group photo from the Call to Conversation dinner at the Haggas home on May 23, 2018

A group of Wake Foresters gathered over dinner in Winston Salem, NC on May 23, 2018 to discuss Leadership & Character.

Overview and highlights of our Call to Conversation:

  • Key themes about witnessing Leadership & Character included: Empathy, Courage, and Compassion.
  • When considering how to teach leadership and character, it’s easier to model compassion rather than teach it.
  • “Have the strength of character to act when someone can’t defend themselves” Treat others with dignity and respect… even if you don’t agree with them.
  • Do not confuse Leadership with power.

Key points we want Wake Forest students to hear:

  • The faculty and staff are always thinking about them and their well-being.
  • Vulnerability is important to understand and okay to show.
  • Asking for help is not a sign of weakness; rather, it’s a sign of your willingness to learn.
  • Having clarity of a mission helps make tough decisions easier. Stay focused.
  • Be self reliant
