A group of Wake Foresters gathered over dinner in Pinehurst, NC on August 6th, 2018 to discuss Leadership & Character.

Overview and highlights of our Call to Conversation:

  • In our evening, we talked about our family, friends and community members, and the ways they exemplified and inspired good character and leadership.
  • We talked about the importance of character traits such as kindness, compassion, empathy, courage, honesty, humility, resiliency, and self-awareness.
  • We also talked about character-defining moments that rise out of small or large acts and difficult decisions to “do the right thing,” even if the outcome is not personally beneficial – all truly in the spirit of Pro Humanitate.

Our takeaways included an acknowledgement and acceptance that character and leadership comes in different forms and will evolve throughout our lives. Despite the different perspectives on character and leadership across generations, there were many similar takeaways. We also reflected on the value of having erudite conversations that enable all involved to share an opinion/ insight and listen to those of others and agree to disagree, if differing perspectives are shared. Lastly, we agreed on the importance of acknowledging and affirming one another’s value and having self-awareness around your impact on others.
