Leadership & Character | Winston-Salem, NC
A group of Wake Foresters gathered over dinner in Winston-Salem, NC on October 5, 2018 to discuss Leadership & Character.
Overview and highlights of our Call to Conversation:
- Several of you described the powerful impact that one person can make. Others talked about the importance of teamwork, and leadership in the context of community.
- We discussed the courage required to align behavior and values, even in the face of great personal cost. Some of us discussed sacrifice, and one person asked, “Does character always involve sacrifice?”
- Several of us shared examples of “speaking truth to power,” and standing in the face of injustice.
- A few of us talked about humility, empathy, and service to others. We talked about ego, and whether strong leaders should subjugate themselves to elevate others.
- Some key words/phrases that came up during our personal takeaways included: courage, sacrifice, humility, empathy, values, servant leadership, ethics, community, truth to power, and love.
- A few questions that were posed include: Is leadership a luxury? How does one find the courage to speak up? Can people be effective in an organization or community that doesn’t share their values? How do we define “good” or “bad” values? Is it possible to teach leadership and character?
