Community I Winston-Salem, NC
A group of Undergraduate, Graduate Students, Faculty, and Staff gathered over dinner in the Reynolda Hall on Wednesday, November 28, 2018, to discuss Community.
Overview and highlights of our Call to Conversation:
- People find community in different ways but there is incredible power in community. Community presents two sides, comfort, and discomfort.
- Comfort or positive community includes support, intentionality, giving back, affirmation, active listening, respect of differences, diversity, education, empathy, and connection.
- Discomfort feels like isolation, frustration, cliquish, and can be shallow. The question the group posed after wrapping up is to consider what role you are playing in community.
- The most surprising or unexpected takeaway from the evening’s dinner was how in depth the conversations went and how vulnerable each person was. Everyone seemed to agree that it does not feel good to be left out of not have community. There was not a moment where I can recall the group having a disagreement about community.
