Community | Myrtle Beach, SC
A group of Wake Foresters gathered over dinner in Myrtle Beach, SC on November 6, 2018 to discuss Community.
Overview and highlights of our Call to Conversation:
During our conversation, we discussed many examples of where we have witnessed and experienced a sense of community and also recognized areas and situations where our towns, our institutions and our country as a whole fall short of community. We mentioned the challenges of today’s world of technology and social media, and the ways they can be barriers to genuine conversation and a sense of community. And we discussed ways we can each work to improve and support community in our own corner of the world.
Some themes from our conversation included:
- Feeling a part of community requires feeling valued.
- Having a sense of community also requires that we find common ground, especially with those with whom we may at first seem to share nothing in common. Community necessitates identifying, acknowledging and celebrating this common ground.
- Feeling a part of a community means we are accepted exactly where and how we are.
