Leadership & Character | Cincinnati, OH
A group of Wake Foresters gathered over dinner in Cincinnati, OH on August 12, 2019 to discuss Leadership & Character.
Overview and highlights of our Call to Conversation:
- Our main discussion was about how we can go against what seems easy or natural, especially when it seems harmless.
- We spoke about our tendency to self-select into groups of close friends/neighbors and how that typically seems benign. As our conversation progressed we also spoke about the dangers of these self-imposed “echo chambers,” the ways that unconscious bias can run unchecked and unnoticed in these groups, and the effects of institutionalized racism and other forms of injustice that can often lurk behind these seemingly positive social groups that add so much comfort and support to our lives.
- What’s important is that we are noticing these things, learning about ourselves, and recognizing the power of listening to others with different views than our own- getting ourselves out of our self-selecting groups.
