Leadership & Character | San Diego, CA
A group of Wake Foresters gathered over dinner in San Diego, CA on September 27, 2018 to discuss Leadership & Character.
Overview and highlights of our Call to Conversation:
Overall, our conversation really focused on what it means to be a person of character, digging deep into the qualities and actions that define and exemplify a person who lives a life of character.
- Qualities of Character: More than anything, people of character are people of empathy who stand out in their distinct thought and consideration of others.
- Character is Sometimes Unexpected: When sharing examples of character in action, one interesting tie between a few of our stories was almost an element of surprise when someone acted in an unexpected way. In some cases, it may have been a single act of character that shows a spark of humanity from a person otherwise without character.
- Focusing on Intention: Life is full of opportunities where we can actively choose to do something of character. Start small, but be thoughtful and intentional in seeing and seeking those opportunities to act and making choices of character. Not only does this practice allows us to step back from ourselves and recenter, but we often feel much better afterwards.
- Wrestling with Context & Bouncing Back: Effective leadership could influence context to make acts of character more tempting than credible fear.
- Learning the Norms of Character: We look forward to seeing how building expectations for thoughtful conversation and establishing norms will help Wake Forest produce a new generation of incredible leaders and changemakers.
