Gender in Society I Winston-Salem, NC
A group of Undergraduate, Graduate Students, Faculty, and Staff gathered over dinner in the OPCD Suite with Dr. Amy Wallis on Wednesday, February 13, 2019, to discuss Gender in Society.
Overview and highlights of our Call to Conversation:
- We engaged in a very open sharing of ways gender has impacted us in our various current and past communities. Some of the highlights included:
- Acknowledgment that society and individuals prescribe very different roles to us based on our gender; we became aware of these at an early age
- Personal experiences of these stereotypes, biases, and even some very damaging mental, emotional, and physical harm
- Exploring beliefs that both men and women learn these roles and expectations; so we should go forward continuing to learn and teach about ways that roles solely based on gender negatively impact us all; change can and must start with us
- Talking, listening, and honest communication is important; Don’t be quiet; find a tribe but be a tribe
- We can inspire, encourage, and support each other!
