Wellbeing | Atlanta, GA
A group of Wake Foresters gathered over dinner in Atlanta, GA on March 13, 2019 to discuss Wellbeing.
Overview and highlights of our Call to Conversation:
- We all learned from one another about how they observed others making active decisions to pursue wellbeing first hand in their life. Throughout our conversation, specific characteristics of wellbeing were shared which resonated with all. One aspect we discussed was understanding the practice of self care. Self care included not only what you want to do to improve an area of life but knowing what not to do so that you can keep caring for others. We talked about knowing your limitations and understanding your gifts as ways to strengthen your wellbeing.
- Our group found delight in several stories expressing the positive outlooks of a curious mind. We could all do well to wrestle with the question brought up by one participant, “Why would you want to do something you could master”? We talked about how approaching work and life with an open mindset brings new experiences and rich new relationships.
- As we continued to discuss wellbeing, we heard that sharing your weaknesses and how you wish to grow may enlist the surrounding community to better ensure success. When we share our goals with others we open to accountability. This accountability can help us reach our goals.
- Finally, we probed the questions on what wellbeing really is. Through asking this question we were able to hear a great quote that caused all of us to pause, “Happiness is the exercise of vital powers, along lines of excellence, in a life affording them scope.” Though our emotional wellbeing is only one aspect of overall wellbeing, this quote helps us see a holistic application of many of our life’s energies towards fruitful ends plays a large part towards our wellbeing. We all have had work scenarios or life situations that we were not excellent at and placed in scenarios where we could not use our individual giftedness. We can look back and know precisely that those times were not immediate episodes of wellbeing. We grew from those times, might have even gained appreciation for others and deepened our empathy. But, we know when we are in a place that allows us to thrive individually.
